ST. MARYS’ INDEPENDENCE DAY FESTIVAL MAKES THE LIST OF TOP 20 EVENTS IN THE SOUTHEAST | Events
The St. Marys Convention & Visitors Bureau is excited to announce a second 2012 St. Marys festival has earned a spot among the Southeast Tourism Society’s “Top 20 Events in the Southeast” list. The Kiwanis Club of St. Marys 44th Annual Independence Day Festival will be held on Wednesday, July 4th and is one of the area’s most popular and well attended events. It is most deserving of this designation.
Angela Wigger, Director of Tourism, nominated the event as a Top 20 candidate stating, “As home to the Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base, along with Coast Guard and Marine detachments, patriotism is King in St. Marys and this patriotic day is a local and regional favorite! Visitors who attend are exposed to a true hometown feeling that will instill in them a desire to return to St. Marys again and again.” The submission also noted that the day offers a boost for our lodging partners, shops, and restaurants and is an event that our merchants can look forward to as an economically rewarding holiday.
The festival features a full day of events including a 5K run, pancake breakfast, a “Happy Birthday U.S.A.!” themed parade, over 100 vendors, incredible musical entertainment, watermelon seed spitting & eating contests for all ages, and children’s rides and activities. The evening culminates with a spectacular FIREWORKS display over the St. Marys River.
Kiwanis are known as leaders in community involvement and the planning and execution of this festival attests to their success in this area as funds raised are used to assist in club programs for children throughout Camden County, Wigger said.
This year funds are being raised to assist in providing the annual fireworks show that Camden County residents and visitors have become accustomed to. The St. Marys Convention & Visitors has thankfully gained financial support from the St. Marys Downtown Development Authority, Navy Federal Credit Union, IDS Alarm Services, Cumberland Inn & Suites, United First Federal Credit Union, St. Marys Downtown Merchants Association, Satilla Computer Solutions, and Georgia Power. Sponsorships are still being sought and anyone wishing to make a contribution on behalf of their business or in the name of their family is encouraged to call the St. Marys CVB to inquire about sponsorship levels.
The Southeast Tourism Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and development of tourism throughout the Southeast. Its twelve member states are Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. The best events from member states compete to receive the prestigious designation. Through a nomination process, STS chooses the Top 20 events in the Southeast for each month of the year and publishes this list of winners quarterly. The Top 20 Events publication is sent to over 1,600 newspapers, magazines, radio stations, TV stations, AAA publications and others. This award means St. Marys will benefit greatly by the publicity and exposure this designation affords.
